Essential Word Lists – Spelling

These  words are the most frequently used words for reading and writing and need to be learned off by heart.

• Practice 5 words three times per week.
• Practice in order of the words. Don’t skip any words.
• Start at the list you are up to.

Tips to make spelling fun, but even more importantly… stay in your memory:

• copy, hide, then try again. Try it with your eyes closed!
• write words in chalk on the concrete.
• write words in different colours for each different sound.
• create letter shapes with plasticine or pipe cleaners.
• write the word in sentences.
• type words in crazy fonts on the computer.
• click on spellingcity.com to go to free spelling games. Your parent/caregiver needs to register first. I will show you how it helps you practice your spelling words independently. You do not need to pay to use the free activities.
• come up with your own practising ideas.
• practice your words three times per week e.g. Mon, Tue, Wed. Don’t cram homework in on one night as you are less likely to retain the information in your long term memory.
